Shared note

We know only a little about him, but we also have reliabledocuments concerning him. To begin with, we have not yetbeen able to prove his exact birthdate. But we found anentry at the parish-register of Betzenstein concerning thebirth of a Conz Eckart: "Mergners Item ein Kind getaufft von Fritz Eckhardt zueMergners. Gefatter Kunz Pomp zu Eckenreuth den 4. Junij Ao1573" Since the godfather was called Kunz, we can take forgranted, that the child of Fritz Eckart also was calledKunz. Presumably this Kunz is our Conz. Therefore we canassume he was born in 1573. The parish-register of Betzenstein also shows anappropriate marriage entry: "31. 1. 1592 Cuntz Eckart ist getraut worden mit Christina, des Görgen Kaysers Ehelicher Tochter." The various names of villages mentioned: Mergners, the nexttime Betzenstein, and the next time Hunger, are all smallvillages, which are situated very close together. If this Cuntz Eckart is really our Conz, then we also haveknowledge about one earlier generation. In theparish-register of Betzenstein we have the following entry: "Fassnacht Ao 1555 . Hunger. Dienstag an Fassnacht FritzEckhardt vom Hunger mit Kunigunde Hertlin vom Plech getrautworden." ------ We have many entries from the parish-register concerningour Conz. He held his property in feudal tenure administrated by theland administration office of Nuremberg (LVA). We have knowledge of many entries concerning Conz from theLVA, from parish-registers and from archives. Here we willmention only one example: State archives in Nuremberg, Rep. 72, volume 673, page 120LAA: "Schweinthal: on December l in the year 1612 Hans Bruttingof Schweinthal and also Conz Eckart of the same place, paid20 guilder for land-tax and still owe 58 guilder. On April19, 1613 " If Conz Eckart paid the remaining amount of 58guilder as land-tax." Conz Eckart bought from Hans Brutting in December 1612 afarm at Schweinthal at a price of 1.200 guilder. The abovementioned land-tax is due to this. Interesting is the entry: State archives in Nuremberg, Rep. 72, volume 43, page 79: "January 12, 1614. Contz Eckardt and Hans Eckardt were bothsued for borrowed money by the Jew Mair of Wannbach andwere cited to the land administration office's chancelleryat Nuremberg." Apparently Conz Eckart paid, but Hans didn't. We don't knowfor sure if he is related to us. State archives in Nuremberg, Rep. 72, volume 859 (penaltyregister): "Schweinthal: Hans Eckardt was sued for two different debtsby the Jew Mair, namely 28 and 33 guilder, together 61guilder, and was put in jail by the land administrationoffice's chancellery. Actum January 19, 1614. As the necessary bail was paid, he was set free very soon." All this happened in a time, when only Jews were allowed tolend money; but, as we see, they were always called "Jews". --- The land administration office took care of everything. Thus we have an entry of August 26, 1623: "Conz Eckart was cited to Nuremberg on Thursday, September4, due to the suit of Hans Müller of the same place, because of a brawl." We have an immense number of such entries, so that theexistence of Conz Eckart äs our ancestor is absolutely sure. With regard to the day of his death we know that in 1632 hewas still alive and in 1634 he was already dead. Thereforehe must have died in 1633. Conz had three sons, Hans, and once again Hans, and Wolf. The fact that two sons were called Hans is connected withthe strict custom that children were given the names oftheir godfathers. And if two godfathers had the name Hansas first name, the two sons were also called just the same.
